Henri Cartier-Bresson Photo Critique

FRANCE. Alpes-Maritimes. Vence. February 1944. French painter Henri MATISSE at his home,
villa "Le RĂªve"

FRANCE. Paris. 1956. The Seine and the Palais du Louvre (view from Quai Anatole France)

What drew me to this bottom image was the feeling that it gives off. It seems like a very eerie scene to me with the fogged sky and the deserted walk way. It reminded me of when I was in New York at the beginning of the pandemic starting here in America and I was walking along a street in Manhattan and there was barely anyone on the sidewalks and only about five cars passed by. It was very surreal and the emptiness of the streets made it feel very eerie, like this scene here.

Visually I think this picture uses line and contrast really well. The lines of the river and side walk lead your eye from one side of the picture to the opposite. The lines of the trees leads your eye up them and also across the image with how they are lined up along the river. The contrast of the texture of the river and of the cobble side walk is really nice and the strong line (I believe its the lip of the sidewalk) that splits them adds to it. I also like how the image seems very defined in the bottom and as it look towards the top the photo seems to start to fade. I am not sure if this is due to his aperture or the fog in the sky or both but I like the effect. The faint and blurred building in the background also adds interest to the image.

Project 6 Proposal

Documentary - taking care of a small farm

My first idea is to capture some chores of taking care of a small farm house. Through these photos I want to give a small view into a few of the many things that need to be taken care of at a small farm house. With the pandemic and people wanting to lead more sustainable lives, I’ve heard many are turning to gardening and keeping animals. This can be a documentary showing a bit of what it takes for those that want to start a garden or small farm. To get the shots I will follow my parents around as they do the chores with the garden and animals.

Proposed Shots: watering the garden, removing bugs from plants, picking plants, feeding the goats, putting the goats in their pen and outside area, feeding the chickens, moving the chicken tractor

Sample Shots:

Documentary - old farm house charm

My second idea is to take photos of different parts of my house.  My parents bought a house that was built in the 1870s to fix up so it has some interesting parts to it and a lot of character. Through these photographs I want capture the charm that old houses have by photography some of the more unique aspects of the house and some of the worn parts of the house that shows its age. To get these photos I will find the parts/places in or of my house that still hold the charm of its age and try to capture it in a pleasing way.

Proposed Shots: Inside the barn, paint chipped surfaces, sun damaged outer walls, old doors, dilapidating porch, witches window, curved hallway, stair cases

Sample Shots:
